World Blood Donor Day :donate blood and Embracing the life-saving noble deed

World Blood Donor Day

Some days ago, I was in a hospital and a surprising incident occurred. There was a huge car accident nearby and doctors, staff, family members all were in a rush. Suddenly, I saw the head of the family tensed and panicked and further heard that the doctors needed blood to operate and there is no available blood of that group in the blood bank. The person was crying over the phone, contacting his near ones to come and give blood for his son. All his efforts seemed to be wasted until the arrival of a person. He was a complete stranger to the family, who silently came and gave his blood and even assured the family of their son’s good health. I could see that father’s eyes were filled with thankfulness towards the unknown angel.

Spare some moments and become a superhero.

Life becomes meaningful when we spend some moments to help others. There is nothing quite like the feeling we get, when we make someone smile. People donate food, money, clothes, toys, etc. to the needy. But do you know, there is a donation that does not need any effort or money, and you can save lives. Yes, blood donation does not cost you anything but can make the difference between life and death for someone.  Blood cannot be synthesized artificially, it can only be transferred. None should die due to a shortage of blood. Therefore blood donation is an act for humanity.

Let us keep the world beating!

Celebrated every year on June 14, World Blood Donor Day is a special event for all the blood donors over the globe. The day highlights the significance of blood donation and is an opportunity to make people aware about the need of blood donation. It is also a chance to salute those angels and  heroes who donate blood regularly and save lives.

Blood donation is a challenge in these hard time of pandemic. With the aim to encourage blood donation, this year , World Blood Donor Day is going to be celebrated with theme ” Give blood and keep the world beating”

Let us dispel all the myths.

There are many false beliefs about blood donation. People think that their bodies will become weak if they donate blood and will take a lot of time to cover the loss. Some think their immunity will become lower making them susceptible to diseases.

But the truth is that blood donation improves your cardiac health and reduces the chances of heart attacks. Donating blood boosts the body with energy. There is an emotional satisfaction that happens as a result of contributing towards the greater good of mankind. It also aids in reducing weight. Moreover, regular blood donors are healthier as RBC production is boosted in them.

It is safe and important to donate blood.

Blood donation is totally safe and healthy. The amount of blood donated is regenerated within a week of blood donation. Further, you can save up to 3 lives by donating one unit of blood. As there is no substitute for human blood and it can’t be synthesized, so blood donation is extremely necessary.

The curiosity led to the identity of the stranger.

Continuing with the experience I shared before, on inquiring further, I came to know that the ‘angel’ man was a volunteer of an organization named Dera Sacha Sauda who had registered his contact number in hospitals, in case someone needed blood. Locals called them True Blood Pumps or mobile blood pumps. I was amazed to know that humanity is still alive and some people still have time to help others. There are still people who stand with others in need. I became more curious about these people and searched more.

How blood donation made history

Dera Sacha Sauda is a non-governmental voluntary organization with its base at Sirsa, Haryna. The socio-spiritual organization has set jaw-dropping milestones in blood donation.

The organization holds 3 Guinness World records in blood donation!! Let me tell you more. There is also a blood donation record in Asia Book of Record and another one in Limca Book of World records for donating maximum units of blood in a single day.

In order to spread the message of blood donation, the volunteers also created a blood drop formation under the Largest Human Droplet on 24th March 2013.

There is a never-ending need for blood

Do you know that around 42,000 units of blood are required by hospitals in our country every day, and 3 million platelets are needed in a year? So hospitals are always in need of blood and someone is always fighting for his/her life.

-Blood is needed for Thalassemia patients who need a regular blood transfusion to survive.

-There are victims of road accidents and emergency cases whose lives depend on immediate blood transfusion.

-Hospitals require blood to cope with the requirement during operations and surgeries.

-The plasma from blood makes burn victims survive and live again.

-Furthermore, blood is needed in maintaining the level of hemoglobin in patients suffering from severe illnesses like anemia, cancer, hemophilia, etc.

Be there wherever and whenever needed.

It is our duty to make sure that there is the availability of blood of all groups in blood banks. There can be a situation when our own loved ones need blood. Let no one die due to the blood shortage. So let us donate blood regularly, whenever and wherever needed. Let us also become one mobile blood pump.

Dera Sacha Sauda volunteers have proved that one does not need wings to be an angel.

The passion to serve is not limited only to blood donation.

Dera Sacha Sauda is currently doing 134 Welfare Works that include blood donation, cleanliness campaigns, tree plantation, serving the needy, feeding the hungry, building homes for the homeless, women empowerment, spreading education and awareness, etc.  According to these volunteers, they have been given the teachings of serving humanity by their spiritual master, Saint Dr. Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan, who always motivates them. They are millions in number and perform these activities as their sole responsibility towards society and the planet. These people have pledged to donate blood regularly and in times of need.

Conclusion

On this World Blood Donor Day, Let us all pledge to step ahead in this noble cause because if we all donate blood regularly, no one will die due to lack of blood. Let us be that beacon of hope for those who need it, let us be a hero, who saves lives selflessly.
