Every small effort counts: World Environment Day 2026

EVERY SMALL EFFORT COUNTS World Environment Day 2026

Why celebrate World Environment day once a year?

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, What I want to focus by relating to this day is how and why this day needs to be celebrated every single day of our routine lives!

How each and every one of us can contribute in a very small but overall so impactful way. Read on to relate more….

The wake up call for Bangalore

We all can agree that this is the era of social media. We can read so many things happening around the world with just a tap on our phone. Isn’t it amazing? Well! Coming back to the point, you all must have read in the past two years how people are demanding work from home specially the ones working in Bangalore. Do you all know the reason behind it? Is it because of fuel shortage? Is it because of convenience of staying at home instead of far off city? Or is it something else?

The news headlines had words like ‘tanker city’, ‘amid water crisis’…… Yes! That’s right! People started shifting temporarily from various places in Bangalore due to the scarcity of water. Can you imagine the level at which lives got affected? The reason being depleting water resources!!

Learning from Delhi

Another headline read ‘toxic air of Delhi’,

Somewhere it was ‘Record cases of acute respiratory illness’. Yes! The hospitals got flooded with respiratory illnesses because of the toxic air. It is the matter to worry that at one point of time, people did not have clean air to breathe. It cannot be ignored.

This is not just one event that happened in Delhi, but of various other states as well.

Are we ready for the world without fuel?

How can we forget about the recent times when there was anticipation of fuel crisis! How can we forget the panic it created! Though the government made it clear that there is no crisis of fuel currently but the panic surely made us understand what will happen if fuel actually gets scarce. Definitely scary!

Cure or prevention?

The diseases that spread at alarming rates every year in India, specially the mosquito borne diseases like dengue, malaria, chikungunya are the major health burden in the country specially the capital. Why does it happen? Because mosquitos breed in standing water and water gets pooled easily in garbage like plastic bottles, cans, broken items, etc.

It is indeed disturbing! We all need to buckle up and save the environment around us. It was the thing of the past to preserve resources for our future generations. If we keep on wasting them, we might have to live without them ourselves.

How can we work for saving our climate, for our future?

After all, this year’s theme for World Environment Day is ‘Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For our Future’

1.  Let’s start with a glass of water:

We usually start our day by brushing our teeth. Let’s use water in a glass instead of running tap. You will be surprised to see how much water can be saved by this simple trick.

2. Buckets instead of shower:

Let’s stop using shower. Let’s switch to bucket and mug, that means controlled usage of water for baths. It will defined save tonnes of water every single day.

3. A sapling a month keeps air pollution away:

Let’s plant trees around us and take care of them till they are self sustainable. We can start by taking a pledge to plant a tree once every month. We definitely can move one step closer to clean air!! It’s not very difficult to do considering getting something so invaluable in return.

4. Boycott plastic usage:

We can stop the usage of plastic bags and can switch to jute/cloth bags. We can’t risk any more clogging of rivers/drainages. So, let’s carry cloth bags while shopping and stop using plastic ones!

5. Ditch keys, pedal hard:

We can start ditching cars/bikes for short distances and can start using bicycles. Yes we should do that before actual fuel crisis occurs and force us to permanently shift to bicycles or bullock carts like old times.

6. Clean environment, safe environment: We can keep our surroundings clean and protect ourselves from various diseases and prevent sudden rise of acute illnesses occurring as a result of improper garbage disposal

Conclusion

These above mentioned points are very impactful steps towards preserving Nature, we owe it to our Mother Earth for providing us with everything.

So what do you think? Are these too difficult things to implement in our day to day lives? Do you feel the need and responsibility towards Mother Nature?

Let’s take small steps before it’s too late to do anything. We do not have planet B to survive. All we need to do is wake up every single day and just live life a little more responsibly and if we analyse carefully, it’s not hard to do this. We need not do any major changes or uproot our life. We just have to be cautious and not waste our resources at all.
