Launched by Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, this transformative project is an endeavor jointly managed by the K.C. Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation. Over the past 27 years, Project Nanhi Kali has left an indelible mark, impacting the lives of over 550,000 girls, affectionately called Nanhi Kalis, across 15 states of India. This initiative goes beyond mere academic assistance, aiming to instill self-belief, resilience, and a sense of deserving every opportunity in the girls it serves.Project Nanhi Kali has taken its mission to some of the most remote corners of India, from hamlets in rural Maharashtra to tribal settlements on the Araku hills in Andhra Pradesh. It stands as a beacon of hope for countless girls, hand-holding them through their hopes and hardships, ensuring they receive the education they deserve.

To facilitate a conducive learning environment, Nanhi Kalis receive an annual kit containing a school bag, stationery, and a pullover or raincoat. Importantly, the kit also includes a 12-month supply of branded sanitary napkins. This thoughtful inclusion aims to address the issue of unhygienic menstrual practices among teenage girls, empowering them to attend school with dignity.

  • Azad Foundation

Azad Foundation embarked on its journey in 2008, registering as an incorporated charitable trust in Delhi. The organization’s genesis was rooted in the persistent gender inequalities in India, coupled with the urgent need to find non-traditional, high-return livelihood options for poor women in urban areas. Over the last nine years, Azad Foundation has achieved significant milestones in its mission. One of its flagship programs, ‘Women on Wheels,’ has enabled over 1,000 women to become employable by acquiring professional qualifications as chauffeurs in cities where there were previously almost no professional drivers. Azad Foundation, in collaboration with its partner Sakha Wings Consulting Ltd, has made history by placing the first-ever women bus driver with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). Talks are underway to facilitate more women becoming bus drivers, breaking gender stereotypes in a male-dominated profession. In addition to professional training, Azad Foundation has positively impacted the lives of more than 1800 women through programs covering women’s rights, self-defense, sexual and reproductive health, English proficiency, effective communication, first aid, grooming, map reading, and learning key roads and routes. One of the groundbreaking initiatives is the ‘Shahi Betiyan Basera’ or ‘The Royal Daughters’, a sanctuary for girls rescued from the brink of female foeticide. This initiative not only provides these girls with a safe haven but also ensures they receive a comprehensive education, breaking the cycle of discrimination they faced even before birth.Education forms the cornerstone of Dera Sacha Sauda’s empowerment efforts. The educational institutions, established under Baba Ram Rahim’s guidance, go beyond conventional academics. The revolutionary ‘Crown of Lineage’ also known as ‘Kul Ka Crown’initiative challenges conventional norms, promoting matrilineal inheritance and encouraging the boy, if there is another male sibling, to relocate to his wife’s parental place with everyone’s consent, thereby nurturing a more inclusive societal structure. Recognizing the need for ‘self-defense’, Dera Sacha Sauda operates training centers to provide females with self-defense techniques. By offering training in Judo, Taekwondo, and martial arts at grassroots levels, the organization aims to empower girls and counter crimes against women.The ‘Shubh Devi’ initiative takes a compassionate approach toward women ensnared in prostitution, offering not only medical care but also facilitating their rehabilitation and marriages with willing partners, granting them a chance at a dignified life. The emphasis on ‘Self-Esteem’ is evident through vocational centers, such as stitching and weaving, providing employment opportunities as well as free sewing machines for women in rural areas.   • Snehalaya

Snehalaya is more than an NGO; it is a cohesive and passionate family united by the strong belief that no one should stand alone. Many of the staff members themselves were once beneficiaries of Snehalaya’s services, a testament to the transformative power of resilience.Snehalaya, a beacon of compassion and support, translates to ‘Home of Love’ in its profound mission to uplift women, children, and the LGBT communities facing the harsh realities of HIV and AIDS, trafficking, sexual violence, and poverty. Founded in 1989, Snehalaya operates in Ahmednagar, a town and district nestled in the agricultural region of Maharashtra, India. With a dedicated team, the organization extends its services to over 15,000 beneficiaries annually.

Snehalaya has evolved significantly since its inception, growing from education programs for a handful of children of sex workers to a multifaceted organization serving over 19,000 beneficiaries annually. With 22 projects spanning education, healthcare, rehabilitation, and awareness, Snehalaya empowers its beneficiaries to thrive in life.

The organization’s services are primarily targeted at women, children, and LGBT communities affected by poverty and the commercial sex industry. Snehalaya is at the forefront of the fight against HIV and AIDS, working tirelessly to end human trafficking, improve education for deprived children, and campaign for justice to bring rescue, rights, and rehabilitation to those in need

  • Sakhya

The College of Social Work, Nirmala Niketan, has long been a champion of human rights, emphasizing the integration of social work education with a practical response to ground realities. In the 1980s, as the issue of dowry-related violence gained prominence, the College took a proactive stance. Responding to an invitation from the District Vigilance Commission, Government of Maharashtra, the College initiated the ‘Sakhya’ project as an Anti-Dowry Guidance Cell.

Sakhya operated under the aegis of the District Vigilance Committee, initially working under the Chairpersonship of the Collector of Mumbai. While the Vigilance Cell provided funds and support, Sakhya faced challenges due to the lack of focused attention on the pressing issue of dowry violence. In response, the College launched Sakhya as an Anti-Dowry Guidance Cell, relying on the Committee for financial support to appoint professional social workers and execute planned programs.

Since its inception in 1987, Sakhya has been dedicated to addressing dowry-related harassment and domestic violence. Beyond these issues, the organization has diversified its services to include counseling, legal aid, shelter for women in distress, awareness programs on gender issues, and educational programs on family life, HIV/AIDS, value education, and gender sensitization. Sakhya’s proactive approach has made it a beacon for promoting gender equality and justice.
