Engineer’s Day – Meet an Incredible Engineer Saint Dr. MSG

Almost every country devotes a national or international day to engineers every year. India also celebrates September 15 as National Engineer’s Day every year on the birth anniversary of the father of Indian Engineering, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. The whole nation pays homage to India’s finest engineer by devoting this day to him. His remarkable achievements in the field of engineering are motivation for even today’s engineers. Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born on September 15, 1861, Muddenahalli, Karnataka. After completing B.A. from the university of Madras, M. Visvesvaraya completed civil engineering at the college of science in Pune.

Engineer’s Day – Significance

Engineers are backbone of any nation because they make our lives better with their knowledge and skills. The hard work and brain of engineers are behind the technological equipment which we use today. From advanced robots to giant skyscrapers and world’s high-speed trains, everything is the creation of engineers. They are the ones who bring innovative ideas into reality. They tend to find solutions of complex problems, such as designing various equipment for successful disaster management, saving lives by creating sophisticated devices for the medical field etc.

In the year 1912, M. Visvesvaraya became Diwan of Mysore. Even before his diwanship, M. Visvesvaraya contributed a lot in the field of agriculture, banking, irrigation, industrialization, commerce and education. For his major contributions, he was honored with the title of “knight” in 1915. He was also known as Sir MV. He constructed Mysore’s famous and India’s largest, Krishna Raja Sagara Dam. It’s one example of his multifarious projects to strengthen Indian industry and economy. He also contributed to flood management. The automatic water floodgates were first designed by M. Visvesvaraya and constructed in Pune. He is the writer of the books, “Reconstructing India” and “Planned Economy of India”.

He was not only an engineer, but appointed on major roles in Indian industry. Sir MV joined Governing Council of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. He was also a member of Tata Iron and Steel governing board and the founder of Mysore soap factory. University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in Bengaluru is named after him. It was initially established as a Government Engineering college by M. Visvesvaraya. To honour him, the government of India bestowed him with the Bharat Ratnaaward in 1955.

Engineer’s Day – Challenges faced by Indian engineers

India lacks no talent, but there are many difficulties faced by Indian engineers which hinder their career growth. At most places, the quality of education is perishing. Instead of giving practical knowledge to students, only theoretical knowledge is being imparted. It does not benefit the graduates of engineering colleges when they go for jobs because they lack required skills and practical knowledge. Most of them are even unable to find jobs in their field and end up working in other areas. Shortage of faculty, unaffordable education, corruption and rot-learning are also other causes of lack of skilled engineers. These problems can be tackled by the joint efforts of the government and citizens. For example, financially weak students in engineering colleges should be given some relaxation in fee. Governments shouldinclude qualitative and practical education in engineering schools and colleges. Creating more job vacancies by the government in engineering field can be also beneficial.

Conclusion

The efforts of engineers for our communities are valuable. It’s appreciable that we celebrate Engineer’s Day to commemorate the advancements brought by the great engineer, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, but this is not enough. We are still among progressing nations. If engineers develop, our nation will develop. On this engineer’s day, let’s not just read or write about the values of engineers. In fact, we should contribute to solve the issues faced by the engineer communities.
