He secured a Masters in Metallurgy in 1960 and a PhD in Metallurgy in 1963.
He started his professional career with the British Iron and Steel Research Association in 1963. He always tried to contribute to Nation’s development and hence came back to India to serve the nation.
He was the National President of the Confederation of Indian Industry.
He was awarded with several honors, including his appointment as an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1996 and an memorial Knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997 for his donation to Indo- British Trade and Co-operation.
In 2004, the Center appointed Irani as the Chairman of the Expert Committee for the conformation of the new Companies Act of India.
He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2007. In 2008 he was awarded with the Continuance Achievement Award by the Government of India.
He enabled Tata Steel to resuscitate itself with a focus on quality and client satisfaction.
He started the Tata Education Excellence Program in 2003 to ameliorate the quality of academic facilitation through a calibrated approach espoused from the famed Malcolm Baldrige Performance Excellence criteria.
