EARTH DAY 2023
The Earth Is a Fine Place and Worth Fighting for.
-ERNEST HEMINGWAY
While flourishing Industrialization and urbanization raise comfort and provide an increasing number of opportunities for better livelihoods, nevertheless everything comes at the cost of something. This recent development has blindly affected Mother Earth and surrounding nature.
This explains the need of Earth Day.
History behind the annual day
Earth Day 2023: Theme
What we can do in our daily lives
History behind the annual celebrations:
Before 1970, there were no rules for environmental hygiene or waste disposal. There were no air pollution or water pollution acts.
But industrialization had begun long back since the 19th century.
Thus factories continued to discharge harmful matter into the air and water. Soil started becoming unsuitable for plant growth with too much use of insecticides and pesticides. From the flora of land to the aquatic fauna, everyone started suffering in one way or the other.
So, in 1970, no. of organizations started rising in the U.S. for the government to set up rules for environmental hygiene and waste management. The country went through great uprisings throughout the year, and thanks to American senator, Gaylord Nelson that ultimately April 22 witnessed the World’s first Earth day.
As of now, most of the countries observe 22nd April as Earth Day in order to honor the environmental campaigns and raise awareness regarding environmental education.
Earth Day 2023: Theme
The theme of this year’s Earth day is ‘Invest in your planet’. It aims at spreading awareness about renewable resources and global warming.
With increased use of resources like coal, petrol, diesel, the potential non renewable resources are coming to an end. Within a few years, this would mean no electricity, vehicles or factory made stuff anymore, thus putting an end to the comfort human beings enjoy now. Apart from this, the environment would also be no more supportive owing to our continuous degradation of the environment like depleting ozone layer, melting glaciers and deforestation.
Thus there’s an urgent need to find alternate resources whilst educating the common man about the same.
The slogan of this year’s Earth Day is,
‘Give a break to a Mother Earth’
A set of digital posters and reel videos would be passed for raising the awareness regarding the same this year.
Earth Day 2023 would be directed to address the governments to pass appropriate rules for a greener economy.
What we can do in our daily lives:
Undoubtedly a change in economy would be visible when masses participate in the Earth Day campaigns. Yet, every single man contributes to the formation of masses.
Hence it is important for all of us to participate towards a healthier, cleaner and greener surroundings. Here’s what we can do on our part:
Recycle, reuse and reduce ♻️
In particular, reduce the use of plastic plastics, and reuse the ones already in use. Also recycling them can provide budding stuff to use further.
Cleaner surrounding, cleaner nature 🧹
A common practice is to clean the house and throw the waste outside. Let’s not see it as the municipality cleaning ‘streets or roads’, but see it as our responsibility to keep nature clean.
Green Earth 🌍
Let’s pledge to plant at least 1 tree every month. That would generate enough oxygen in our lifetime for the healthy survival of a single person.
Give your car a break 🚗
Better go for carpooling, or walk/cycle to nearby locations. This can make tons of difference in merely a month.
Water conservation💧
Get leaky pipes/taps corrected. Better brush your teeth with a cup of water rather than a flowing stream. Reuse the water used to wash vegetables in watering the plants.
Such simple ways won’t make a difference in our lives, but they’ll definitely make a huge difference in the life of nature.
So let’s join hands in making the world a better place to live in!
